Netflix Review 2026 is the Ads Plan Worth It After 12 Years on the Service

I have had Netflix in the US since 2014. Through every price hike, the password sharing crackdown of 2023, the ads plan launch, the loss of Friends and The Office to other services, and the rise of Netflix Originals. Here is my honest 2026 review.

My short answer: Netflix is still the best streaming service for original series in the US. The Standard plan at $17.99 is the best balance. The ads tier at $7.99 is a fair entry option. Premium at $24.99 only makes sense if you have a 4K HDR TV.

What is Netflix in 2026

Netflix launched DVD-by-mail in 1997, started streaming in 2007, and went global in 2016. Today it is the largest streaming service in the world by subscriber count — about 280 million paid subscribers globally, including 80 million in the US.

Headquartered in Los Gatos, California. CEO is Ted Sarandos. The company also owns a film studio in Albuquerque, NM, and has production facilities in 15+ countries.

What Netflix has in the US in 2026:

• 6,500+ titles in the on-demand catalog
• Netflix Originals — series and films made by Netflix
• Documentaries — strong selection
• Foreign content with subtitles (Korean dramas, Spanish thrillers, Japanese anime)
• Kids and family content with age-appropriate filtering

• Theatrical movies on release (rare exceptions for Netflix-produced films)

Four pricing tiers as of 2026:

Netflix has raised prices several times. Premium was $13.99 in 2018, $19.99 in 2022, $22.99 in 2024, and $24.99 in 2026. That is a 79% increase over 8 years.

Standard with Ads — full review

The ads plan is the response to subscriber complaints about price hikes. At $7.99 it costs less than half the Standard plan.

What you get

• 95% of the Netflix catalog (some titles restricted by licensing)
• Full HD 1080p quality
• 2 simultaneous screens
• Ad-supported with 4-5 minutes per hour of ads
• All Netflix Originals included

What you do NOT get

• Downloads for offline viewing — must be ad-free plan
• ~5% of the catalog that has licensing restrictions on ad-supported tiers
• 4K HDR — only on Premium
• Dolby Atmos — only on Premium

Ad experience

I tested the Standard with Ads plan for 3 months. Findings:

• Ads appear at the start of each movie or episode
• Short series (15-25 min) typically have no mid-show ad breaks
• Longer movies have 2-3 ad breaks of 30-90 seconds each
• Same 4-5 ads cycle for most of the month — gets repetitive
• Ads are skippable on some content, not on others
• About 5 minutes of total ads per hour of content

Verdict: less annoying than expected. Less invasive than Hulu's ad load. Worth it if you watch less than 10 hours a month and want to save $120 a year.

Who should pick Standard

• Couples or small families (2 screens at a time)

• Travel occasionally and want pre-downloaded shows
• Want ad-free without paying for 4K

For 70% of US Netflix subscribers, Standard is the best plan.

Premium — for 4K HDR setups

Premium at $24.99 is the top tier.

• 4K HDR Dolby Vision on supported content
• Dolby Atmos audio
• 4 simultaneous screens
• Downloads on 6 devices
• Up to 3 extra household members

When Premium is worth it

• You have a 4K HDR TV in your main room
• Family of 4+ with overlapping viewing
• You want spatial audio for premium content
• You travel a lot and want downloads on multiple devices

When Premium is a waste

• 1080p TV only — you cannot see 4K HDR
• Solo viewer — 4 screens is overkill
• Limited 4K content — only Netflix Originals and select titles in 4K HDR
• Internet too slow — 4K HDR needs 25 Mbps minimum stable

For me Premium is worth it because I have an LG OLED TV with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The difference between 1080p and 4K HDR Dolby Vision on Netflix Originals like The Crown and Stranger Things is significant.

Password sharing and household rules

This was the controversial change of 2023. Netflix now blocks account sharing between different households.

How Netflix detects households

• Primary household IP — your TV at home
• Devices in same home network — share without restriction
• Devices in different IP for 31+ days — Netflix flags them
• You have 31 days to verify before the device is blocked
• Add extra member at $8.99 a month to keep access

Workarounds that still work

• VPN to home IP — devices connected through your home VPN count as home
• Connect to home WiFi monthly — resets the 31-day clock
• Single-room setups — if everyone uses your TV, you are fine

Workarounds that DO NOT work

• Hotspot from your phone — Netflix sees the cellular IP
• Friends' WiFi briefly — counts as different household after a few days
• Static VPN on another router — Netflix can detect VPN IPs

For most families, paying the extra $8.99 per extra user is the practical solution. The math: 1 main account + 1 extra user = $26.98 a month for 2 households. Still cheaper than 2 separate Standard plans at $35.98.

How to cancel Netflix US

Cancel is easy:

1. Open netflix.com in a browser (cancel does not work on TV apps)
2. Sign in
3. Click your profile icon top right
4. Click Account
5. Click Cancel Membership
6. Confirm

You keep access until the end of the current billing period. No early termination fee. Your watch history and profiles are saved for 10 months if you cancel — you can rejoin and resume.

My take: Netflix and Hulu cover different needs. Netflix for original series. Hulu for catching up on network TV like Abbott Elementary, Survivor, Wheel of Time. Many people subscribe to both.

Netflix vs HBO Max in 2026

My take: HBO Max has better individual shows (The Last of Us, Succession, House of the Dragon). Netflix has more shows overall. Subscribe to whichever matches your viewing habits.

Netflix vs Disney Plus

My take: most US households have both. Disney Plus is cheap and covers kids. Netflix covers adults.

Netflix and VPN

If you travel internationally and want US Netflix content, a VPN is required.

2. Slow Hollywood theatrical pipeline — Warner via HBO Max is better
3. Algorithm fixation — recommends the same 8 things for weeks
4. Search is still bad — finding specific titles is hard
5. Aggressive price hikes — 79% increase over 8 years is too much

These are real complaints but not deal breakers.

Who should subscribe to Netflix

Good fit if you:

• Watch original series often — best catalog in this category
• Like binge-watching — full seasons drop at once
• Have a family — 5 profiles + 2 to 4 screens
• Want foreign content — Korean, Spanish, Japanese, French
• Want documentaries — strong selection
• Are an adult viewer — not just family content

Skip Netflix if you:

• Mainly watch live sports — no NFL, NBA, MLB
• Want theatrical Hollywood films — go to HBO Max
• Only want kids content — Disney Plus is better and cheaper
• Watch only network TV — Hulu is better
• Want premium HBO-tier drama — HBO Max wins

Final verdict

Netflix earns 4.3 out of 5 in my 2026 review. After 12 years and many price hikes I still subscribe because the original series catalog is the best in the streaming world.

For most US households, the Standard plan at $17.99 is the sweet spot. The ads plan at $7.99 is fair value for light watchers. Premium at $24.99 only justifies if you have a 4K HDR setup.

The password sharing crackdown was painful but understandable. The slow Hollywood theatrical pipeline is the bigger problem long-term. Netflix needs to either fix it or accept that HBO Max wins on movies.
